Are your training programs speaking to the modern learner?
“Millennials comprise over 30 per cent of today’s workforce with the percentage growing each year. Millennials have just surpassed Gen Xers as the largest generation in U.S. labor force. (U.S. Census Bureau data). This is a substantial group of people who have grown up in a world very different from the other generations, whose lives are saturated in technology, who are wired differently and have startling attitudinal differences and preferences.New research is showing that their brains are evolving due to the constant influences of technologies. This is the generation that does not write; they keyboard. They are in constant multi-tasking mode, and whose friends are no longer limited by the proximity of their neighbourhoods, schools or even cities. Their social networks are their lifelines and they don’t hesitate to reach out and ask their network how to find a job, solve a problem or access resources. This is the generation that expects their work environment to be at least as tech savvy as they are. It is no longer possible to think workers have the same approach to life, work, or learning as their bosses. In fact, Time magazine reported that Generation Y is forcing a cultural shift on companies and managers. As such they are becoming change agents, forcing organisations to rethink and improve their methods of recruiting, training, and management. If we don’t create an environment that embraces and provides tools to support this generation’s professional growth, they will move to another organisation that does. Not only do you need to consider the Millennials when designing learning solutions but include them in the solutions’ design and development process.” Jane Hart, Understanding Today’s Learner
